Spain's Guardia Civil have arrested the man on suspicion of murder

A 25-year-old man has been arrested on suspicion of killing his parents and injuring four others in a mass shooting in southern Spain, police have said.

Authorities said the shooting was reported at 23:00 local time (22:00 BST) on Monday in the small town of El Ejido, near Almería.

Four others, including two children, were seriously injured and have been taken to hospital.

One is believed to be the suspect's seven-month-old son, according to local media reports.

The identities of the suspect and the victims have not been formally released by Spanish authorities.

Local media say the other child injured is an 18-month-old baby, while a 60-year-old man is also believed to be among those injured in the attack.

The suspect was briefly on the run before turning himself in at a local police station, according to Europa Press.

Guardia Civil said it is investigating the attack and trying to establish a possible motive for the shooting.

Mass shootings in Spain are relatively rare - according to Project Insight, which tracks gun crime in Europe, four were recorded between 2000 and 2023.
